| Chinese traditional landscape painting faces a variety of problems in its development process. We need to constantly reflect on learning, returning to the previous thousands of years of refining, summing up the essence in a steady stream to absorb nutrients. Moreover, in all aspects of poetry, calligraphy, painting, stamp and so on, in every age there were someone to learn in the previous work and, to solve the problem encountered in contemporary society. We call this modeling and learning from ancient works as revivalism movement. This paper mainly discusses painter Zhao Mengfu, who lived in the gap between Song and Yuan. As it is him who owed special social identity and unique historical background and also he was the first to launch revivalism movement. Therefore, this article takes Zhao as a breakthrough, making an in-depth study into revivalism movement. Then, his paper briefly answered the problems as why should we go back. Second, due to the progress of society and the richness and diversity of various painting tools and painting materials, as well as the influence from Western painting, some artist’s painting style has deviated from tradition. In this environment, it is necessary to once again propose the revivalism in order to alert parts of the painters to go on reflection, thereby to correct the direction.By in-depth learning Chinese traditional landscape paintings and traditional landscape painting theories during my post-graduate study, I touched the extensive and profound ancient tradition, which can provide a steady nutrition for our creation, and inject new vitality. Therefore I hope that the views of this article and the little experience accumulated in this paper would inspire a correct understanding of tradition. |
