Urban area accounts for only a small minority in land cover/land use, but hasprofound influence on the development of the city environment, self-adjusting abilityof the natural ecosystem, and agricultural land area. Silk-road Economic Belt putsforward higher requirements for the information extraction of Xinjiang and CentralAsia spatial and temporal variation characteristics of urban expansion.Taking the bridgehead of China to the west open-Xinjiang and Central Asia asthe research areas, choose suitable for use in Asia DMSP/OLS night light intensity ofradiation calibration data, combined with MODIS NDVI data and for the first timethe ISA opaque surface data and other data, research on urban extension in researcharea in recent50years. Paper main research contents are analyzing the existing largeregional scale urban space information extraction graph and extract the urbanextension information. Analyze the research area urban expansion characteristicsfrom urban land proportion, urban growth index per year and UFD. It includes urbansystem analysis of the study area, analysis of spatial extension strength changes, andthe comparative analysis of Urumqi and capital city of five Central Asian countriesdevelopment. The main conclusions of this study are as follows:(1) The new method of urban information extraction can improve urban spaceextraction accuracy, and the overall accuracy could reach90.14%.(2) The urban system structure of Xinjiang is unreasonable, and the city levelgap scale is large; The urban system structure of central Asia is more reasonable thanXinjiang, and different levels city scale is moderate.(3) Xinjiang urban area is growing exponentially in the past50years whichcould reach1102%, and the urban land area growth rate of Uzbekistan reaches543.86%. The urban land area base of Kazakhstan is big in early stage, and theincrease area of urban land use is80%at least.(4) Urban land area growth rate of Urumqi reaches713%, and Tashkent incentral Asian is112%. The former is much higher than the latter. The increase area ofurban land use of Bishkek is50%at least. The UFD of Urumqi land use rises from2.5to3.7. Compared with the Central Asia, the ranking declines one. This shows thatXinjiang develops slowly in urban system construction. The UFD of Central Asialand use also has different degrees of increase; Ashkhabad increases4.7and Tashkentincreases4.8. It shows the city system construction growth is getting morereasonable. In this paper, basing on the characteristics of regional cities and towns development within the scope of this study during the past50years, a new method is presentedthat abstracts the information of large-area cities and towns by use of low-resolutionremote sensing data, then the information is utilized to study the sprawl of regionalcities and towns. It is proved that the method has reasonably high precision andbroad applicability. In addition, this paper provides a strong support for our countryplaying the leading role in the construction of “silk-road economic belt”.
