Color is an important visual language of map, the three attributes of hue,saturation and lightness can be used to reflect the property, grade, quantity and spacedistribution information of object. The flexible use of color can enhance the conceptof classification and be beneficial to strengthen the function of transferringinformation and improve the readability of the map. At present, color has beenwidely used in various types of thematic maps. But due to the device-dependentcharacteristics of color, some accidental phenomena like color-lost and color-castmay occur during the cross media map transmission. This might affect the quality ofreading. A gamut mapping model based on color features for maps was proposed tosolve the problem.The specific work of this paper as follows:(1)Study the main research contents of color gamut mapping technology,which are the choice of color gamut mapping space, the description of gamutboundary and the method of gamut mapping;(2)Analyze the application of color on the map, summarize characteristics ofmap color and two main color schemes;(3)Analyze the reproduction targets of maps of two kinds of color schemesand design or choose a most appropriate gamut mapping algorithm for each one;(4)Determine the color gamut mapping flow for map and research the keytechnology in the process of map gamut mapping implemention;(5)Finish the simulation of the proposed algorithms by MATLAB and designexperiments to verify the availability and feasibility of the map gamut mappingmodel.The main innovations of this paper include:(1)Design “map-device” gamut mapping algorithms based on the analysis ofcolor features and reproduction targets for each kind of map. Especially forsequential scheme map, design an optimization-compression mapping algorithm,which can not only better distinguish the color grade, but also keep the consistencywith the original image;(2)Propose a novel gamut boundary description method, use the method ofleast squares with interpolation condition to piecewise fit the gamut boundary line,which ensure the quality and improve the efficiency of gamut mapping.
