The ninth geological brigade of Xinjiang Geology and Mineral Bureau through two years of exploration of coal resources in Heshituoluogai coalfield area, identified the large complete coalfield reserves 810 million tons in forecast. The development and construction of this large coalfield can not only promote local coal an coal chemical industry, but also strongly support the fifth largest coal base in Xinjiang(Karamay- Hefeng), and have a profound impact on the economic and social development of the western region of the Junggar Basin. In order to accelerate the development and utilization of coal resources in Heshituoluogai coalfield, the autonomous region requires hydrogeological exploration work in a timely manner in Heshituoluogai coalfield, provide protection for large-scale development of the coalfield. With the rapid development of information technology, remote sensing technical and various theoretical analysis in exploration and evaluation of groundwater resources have received increasing attention of hydrogeological research staff.Since the 1960 s,a growing number of researchers have used aerial photographs, satellite imagery interpretation and remote sensing to study the formation, storage, movement characteristics of regional groundwater, as well as changes of water quality and quantity, and combined with a variety of mathematical analysis to improve the objectivity and reliability of the achievement. The technology can not only save some unnecessary spend of manpower and material resources in field exploration, but also can provide hydrogeological basis for planning, development and rational use of groundwater resources. This paper will combine remote sensing’s wide field of vision and informative features, spatial analysis capabilities of GIS technology and field surveys, using remote sensing data of Heshituoluogai coalfield area,by identifying, extracting and comprehensive analysis of remote sensing image information reflecting lithology, geology structure, topography, etc., to identify and analyze hydrogeological characteristics of the survey area, to explore the establishment of a scientific and feasible prediction model which could delineate prospective area of rich-water more quickly and efficiently, give directions for the hydrogeological survey field work in the area.In this study, by comparing the advantages and disadvantages of a variety of mathematical analysis, and ultimately determine the selection of fuzzy analytic hierarchy process to assign weights according to the impact on groundwater storage and transport of each factor(index);after the analysis and research of collected hydrogeological data and literatures in the study area, established the assessment criteria for identification of groundwater prospective area including lithology distribution, topography, structural development, the land use, rainfall and river network in the area;through the analysis of the evaluation indexes by FAHP got groundwater prospect maps eventually, in the study area delineated four water-rich area has been verified by later drilling. This study offers several reliable groundwater-rich prospects for future water-sources area’s survey, while also providing effective reference and guidance for hydrogeological survey in similar conditions’ region.
