When Typhoon No.1409 and Typhoon No.1415 crossed over the Qiongzhou Strait in 2014, they caused serious losses in Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan provinces. In history, the serious damages on the coast of Qiongzhou Strait were caused by the storm surges when Typhoons crossed the strait. The study of storm surge characteristics in this area has a certain guiding significance for the protection and construction of the coast. This paper concentrates on the research of temporal and spatial characteristics of the surge and the influence of different typhoon tracks on the surge in the strait.Firstly, a coupled model of astronomical tide and storm surge for Qiongzhou Strait was established, the verification suggested that the model has high precision. Secondly, a coupled model of wave, astronomical tide and storm surge was established, in which the error is further reduced. The coupled effects of wave, astronomical tide and storm surge were analyzed. In Qiongzhou Strait, the astronomical tide has great influence on the storm surge, and the typhoon wave has little influence on the storm surge. But in the eastern part of the Leizhou Peninsula, the typhoon wave has great influence on the storm surge. Therefore, the coupling effect between the three should be considered in the numerical simulations of storm surge. The temporal and spatial characteristics of storm surge caused by Typhoon No.1409 and Typhoon No.1415 were analyzed. The processes of storm surge in these two typhoons are similar, but the set-ups have a great difference. The major factor that causes the difference is the scale of the Typhoon, the second factor is the track of the typhoon.56 typhoon models of different tracks were established on the basis of Typhoon No.1415 and numerical simulations of storm surge were carried. The diagnostic analysis shows that significant surges appeared in the position at the maximum wind speed radius when the Typhoons land or stand off. Especially in the eastern part of Leizhou Peninsula. When a Typhoon that the angle in the latitude and path of the typhoon is 0-5 degrees enters the Strait, lands in Xuwen county, turns to the north, and passes through Leizhou City, it will lead to the most significant set-up in the eastern part of Qiongzhou Strait and the sea area on the eastern side of Leizhou Peninsula.
