Cutting is the main processing method of modern manufacturing industry, and theinnovation of the cutting tool technology has been the main driving force for the processof mechanical manufacturing industry. The quality and performance of the cutting toolshould directly affect the efficiency, quality and precision of the machining process. Thecutting tool with indexable inserts has been widely spread for its excellent performance,so the efficient and reliable design of the cutting tool has been a critical problem that isurged to be solved. Mechanical design is a repetitive process during which the structuralparameters of the products require constant adjustment and modification. Every changeof the dimensions would be likely to cause a huge amount of redundant tasks in solidmodeling and increase the design time significantly in traditional design mode. Also thetraditional production performance analysis demands great expenses and work but withgreat limitation of the data reliability. Taking indexable face milling cutter for example,the paper applies finite element analysis software to analyse the static and modalcharacteristics of the structure of the cutting tool,which will offer theoretical referencefor the model design.Firstly the paper applies the static analysis to the finite analysis model to get theweak zone of the structure,which provides the basis for the consequent structureoptimization. Then the paper focuses on the modal characteristics of the tool structure toget the vibration performance.Based on the analysis of the parameter’s influence on the tools’ performance, thepaper takes a deeper research on the method of parametric model design. Exploiting UGsoftware as developing tool and VC as environment, the paper develops an interactiveGUI.In order to provide the convenience for data handling the secondary developmentsoftware insert a specific database, which applies ODBC as Data access interface andSQL syntax as database manage language.the database can accomplish the function ofthe insertion,search, deletion etc.In order to accomplish the solid modeling of the cutting tool,the paper studiesthree different ways,the modification of expression, the modification of UDF andprogramming method.Also the paper analyses the topology structure of the UG solidand accomplish the feature extraction based on the former analysis. Taking advantage ofthe serial production,the paper develops a program to increase the assemblingefficiency,which proves to be feasible in the application of the assembling of theindexable cutting tool and its component.
