Moistening the vast island, the five major rivers called Nandu River, Changhua River, Wanquan River, Lingshui River and Ningyuan River in Hainan Province are the fountain of life protecting Hainan’s natural ecology and developing social economic. Ecological footprint is a biological productive areas which can provide or given the waste steadily. Ecological footprint analysis refers to use the biological ecology area and physical index to measure whether the regional ecological and development of economic society in sustainable, which fill in gaps in monetary and nonmonetary indicators and other regional evaluation method of sustainable development. In this paper, the author uses the ecological footprint model to evaluate the sustainable development level of ecological economic system of Hainan’s five major river basins. The result indicate that the total five major river basins ecological defect (surplus), namely the ecological carrying capacity can be used as follow:Lingshui River0.984620, Ningyuan River0.735402, Changhua River0.662859, Nandu River0.358689, Wanquan River0.262039. Among them, Lingshui River, Ningyuan River and Changhua River are relatively good but not particularly that good. The reason is the have ecological red edge, which need a high attention. Therefore, in the future development, the regional population should be strictly controlled, the per unit area yield of nature resources should be improved relying on science and technology, saving and protecting the nature resources, utilization the existing resources efficient and reasonable, promoting the sustainable development between economic social and environment in the five major river basins. This paper contributes to the correct understanding of the relationship between human and nature in practice, thus could effectively control the extent of utilization of nature resources and supply capacity supporting human survival in Hainan five major river basins and provide scientific basins for the protection of Hainan five major river basins ecological sustainable development planning and decision making.
