The stability of coal seam roof is one of the main factors in affecting the coal mine safety production,and the engineering geological characteristic is a very factor affecting it. Usually the engineering geological characteristics are mainly sedimentary, mechanical properties and structural features. Therefore, from the analysis of coal seam roof’s engineering geological characteristics to evaluate the stability of roof rock can provide a scientific basis for the design and roof coal mining management. In this paper, based on geological exploration and mining data of KouZidong coal mine, using multidisciplinary theory and comprehensive research methods, the No.13-1coal seam roof’s engineering geological characteristics which are sedimentary,structure features and rock mechanical properties were studied. Sedimentary characteristics mainly include lithology characteristics, lithology space distribution rule and transverse development characteristics, the types of rock strata combination. Rock mass structure analysis mainly are planes of sediment and structure. And using geometric analysis, mathematical statistics and fractal geometry method, the structure planes is studied especially. By the rock mechanical properties of roof, rock mechanics parameter space change rule is studied using experimental data.According to the characteristic of fuzziness about roof rock mass stability evaluation, a model based on fuzzy hierarchy analysis method was set up. Using selected engineering geological factors which affecting coal seam roof stability, the roof in the studied area is evaluated. By the results of roof rock mass stability evaluation, the study area is divided into four different stability levels:stable region, middle stable region, unstable region, highly unstable region.Based on the analysis of geological characteristics of the first mining area, using FLAC3D numerical software, geology numerical model is established. Using stepwise excavation, the datum and data in production which are stress redistribution, displacement changes, strata damage related were analyzed, The conclusions provide the basis for coal seam mining.
