Hot shear for aluminum rod is used as premises facility in the small to medium-sized extrusion press. Thanks to this key technology, aluminum rods of various length can be produced without causing any metal loss from the process of casting to that of extruding and with the satisfaction of process requirements. In that case, production efficiency can be effectively improved, while lowering production costs and the waste of metals. This kind of facility is still unequipped in80%of aluminum press lines in China, so it’s quite necessary and meaningful to develop such device of high accuracy and low cost.This paper is focused on the key project supported by Nanping’s Science and Technology development plan:the development and application of hot long rod shearing technology of long aluminum. The target is mainly centered on two key parameters which is closely related with shear quality, that is, shearing clearance and clamping force. Besides, cutting tool as a key part in the cutting process is also optimally designed.Firstly, simulation module was established based on the elastic-plasticity theory and fracture criterion. The relation between shearing stroke and shearing force under different shearing gap was put forward through simulation. After a series of analysis on cutting, the process of crack formation and development and its influence to product quality were figured out. Besides a large number of experimental analysis were performed and reasonable shearing axial clearance was acquired.Secondly, hot shearing experiments of different tonnage have been done and the least clamping force was detected which was need in the shearing process. By contrast of these data collected previously and the cross section quality, the reasonable least clamping force was eventually worked out.Lastly, structure optimization of the shearing blade of the equipment has been conducted by simulation based on Solidworks and Ansys.On the basis of these results, a series of product with such design has been applied in some company, and has brought great economic benefits.
