In this paper, taking fractal theory and fractal art as theoretical basis, through wood anatomy experiment, the microscopic section samples of cross section, radial section and tangential section from four softwoods and four hardwoods were obtained. Using fractal box-counting method, the fractal characterization of wood macro (micro) texture and structure image were quantitatively analyzed. Using the questionnaire to research the emotional characterization of wood texture and structure image in both macro and micro aspects, the relation between wood structure image fractal dimension and emotional characterization was established. Using fractal and emotional characterization data and fractal software (Ultra-Fractal), combined with modern pattern aesthetic theory and composition principles, the creation of wood fractal pattern and hand-drawing fractal pattern were carried out. Application design in decorative environment with such patterns was conducted and a series decorative fabric and two sets of art ceramics were worked out.The main results of this study are as follows.(1) Wood macro (micro) texture features and structural order has obvious fractal characteristics. Overall, the fractal dimension of hardwood macro (micro) structural image is larger than that of softwood. This means that the structure of the hardwood image is more complex than that of softwood. The order of the fractal dimension is not the same between soft and hardwood of their three Sections. The general order of softwood fractal dimension is:cross-section> tangential-section> radial-section. The general order of hardwood fractal dimension is:cross-section>radial-section>tangential-section.(2) The emotional characterization survey data of wood structure image shows:soft and hard wood macro image exhibited "natural","harmony" and other related emotional characteristics which indicated wood macro texture can give people a well emotional acceptation. Most softwood macro (micro) structural image gives people a feeling like "simple" and "soft". The structural image of hardwood was described as "complex" and "rough". The research of emotional characterization reflects the structure difference between softwood and hardwood.(3) Using fractal pattern design software (Ultra-Fractal), combined with modern pattern aesthetic theory and composition principles, wood structure patterns with both art and scientific beauty were worked out. Using hand-drawing method, new fractal patterns from wood macro (micro) structure images were obtained. The decorative effect of such patterns is satisfactory, and the creative source of the modern hand-drawing art can be enriched through such approach.The designed works of decorative fabric and art ceramics showed very good use and art value, and this provided a reference for wood fractal pattern application in the future.
