China’s energy consumption is coal-based, and a lot of fly ashes are discharged every year. This brings great pressure to China’s ecological environment. To Shanxi province, this problem is particularly prominent. At present, when facing how to utilize coal fly ashes, the majority of thermal power plants would choose stack it. It will not only cause secondary pollution to the environment, but also a waste of ash resources. This paper is based on the pollution of coal fly ashes and wastewater, using lytag as filter medium in biological aerated filter to treat wastewater. It has positive significance in transforming the trash into treasure. This paper makes a research on the preparation of Lytag, related factors during BAF process operating, and the quality of water when changes BAF process conditions. We explored optimum experimental parameters under which the quality of outlet water is the best. This result show that:(1) In the preparation stage of Lytag:Comparing Lytag’s water performance under different sintering conditions, Determine the optimum sintering conditions. When holding time is20min, sintering temperature is1200℃, the clay content of20%, the water performance of Lytag is the best.(2) In the start-up phase of BAF:During start-up, it proposed that gradually increase in water flow to the design flow, combination of natural biofilm formation and inoculated biofilm formation, upward flow were good ways. When biofilm succeed, the removal of COD, NH3-N, total nitrogen are70%,74%,53%.(3) In the stable operation stage of BAF:Under weakly alkaline condition, When BAF backwash cycle is48h, HRT1h, gas-water ratio is4:1, removal efficiency of COD, NH3-N are best. After a brief stop-restart, BAF can quickly restore its water treatment capacity.
