The characters the startup and shutdown of the hot oil pipeline play a primary role in the reliable and safety working of the pipeline, and the study on the shutdown process of the hot oil pipeline is very important to the proper running of the gathering and transporting system.Thorough researches are conducted on hot oil pipeline of Yanchang oil field according to the characteristics of the pipeline, such as small transporting amount, low safety factor, too frequently start and stop, etc. Firstly, experimental study is carried out on the relationship between density, rheology and temperature of samples from Yanchang oil field, the character of temperature variation and rheological property is achieved. Then numerical simulation is conducted on the temperature field of the earth around buried the hot oil pipeline when it is started and shutdown, the effect of influencing factors on the shutdown process of the pipeline are analyzed, such as overall heat transfer coefficient, equivalent diameter and equivalent thickness of wax deposition and so on, so the optimized working parameter is achieved. Finally finite element and finite difference method are utilized to write simulation program for shutdown and restart of hot oil pipeline, the shutdown of the pipeline is calculated and the results in summer and winter are achieved separately. The results are in good according to the actual working condition. From the research work of this paper, precise management of the startup and shutdown of the hot oil pipeline from Yanchang oil field can be achieved, the temperature change can be accurately predicted, all these can do great help to the proper running of the pipeline.
