Information acquisition, management and application are the three theme of spatial information technology which currently is a research hotspot all over the word.3D laser scanning technology is a new emerging technology which has been an important means of spatial data acquisition. It has many merits that the traditional routine measures technology hasn't such as speediness, non-contact, real-time characteristic, dynamics, initiative, digital characteristic, high accuracy, high density, high efficiency, etc.3D laser scanning technology has abroad development foreground and application requirement in many fields. For example, it can be applied in setting up urban 3D model, the forestry investigating, the calamity assessing, topographical measurement under water, measurement of the deposit, measurement of the dangerous field, measurement of the flexible goal, investigation and recovery of the historical site, etc.3D laser scanning technology is very likely to bring a new technology revolution to surveying industry.3D laser scanning technology is researched from surveying science point of view in this article. At first, the thesis introduces the research situations of 3D laser scanning technology, and the basic principle of its system. Secondly, the multiple 3D laser scanners are classified in detail, and the difference between the laser scanning technology and the traditional measure methods is simply discussed. Thirdly, CMS laser scanner, developed by Optech company, and its post-processing software—PolyWorks10.0, are amply presented. Then, the thesis analyzed error sources in the course of collecting point clouds, and the point precision of the point clouds affected by error. At last, according to the character of point clouds data which is acquired by 3D scanner, a procedure used to compress the data is developed. Combined the use of CMS in abandoned stope of Dahongshan copper ore, this thesis expounds the flow of 3D laser scanning technology's application, including 3D data acquisition, processing and interpretation of 3D data. The thesis discusses the methods that 3D scanning technology is applied to surveying field, and their advantages. Their engineering applicability and some problems are summarized, and the effects of engineering application are analyzed. The results indicate that 3D laser scanning technology has more advantages than traditional measurement because of speediness, high performance, and high precision of the scanner during obtaining space data. And therefore this technology will show a wide prospect of applying in the surveying field.
