Induced polarization (IP) method is an effective method used to prospect concealed metal deposits, also it has got excellent geological results in the exploration of hydrogeology and engineering geology. Based on the former interpretation methods used for explaining IP anomalies, the further study of a quantitative interpretation method which can improve the interpretation precision is made in this paper. The basic parameters, such as apparent resistivity and apparent polarizability (or percent frequency effect), are usually used to interpret IP abnormities directly. But it often gets poor explanation results when we just depend on the feature of primitive curves. So it's very necessary to do a further processing on these parameters. As the horizontal differential property of IP abnormities is close associated with spatial information of abnormal bodies, lots of numerical simulation work, mainly about plate models under volume polarization is done. According to the systematical analyzing of simulation results, the coincidence relationship is summarized between the characteristics of single horizontal derivative and quadratic horizontal derivative of apparent polarizability and the dip orientation and buried depth of deposits.First, some frequently-used quantitative interpretation methods and their problems in IP method are reviewed in this paper. The numerical simulation work is based on the special commercial FEM program, named ANSYS. There is a simple introduction of the main characteristics of ANSYS in this paper and it focuses on the steps and key problems of using ANSYS to model numerically IP forward problems. Then, the differential method of IP abnormities is briefly deduced, and some effective IP date processing methods are introduced. At last, in the chapter of forward simulation, the author does lots of numerical simulation work on different kinds of models. According to detailed analysis, the author concludes the quantitative interpretation method using the differential characteristic of IP abnormities. From the results of simulation work, this method was proved to be effective in quantitative interpretation.
