With the development of oil and natural gas industry, pipeline transportation mode has such advantages like use less space, safer and more quickly than other methods. It’s increasingly becoming the main mode of transport in modern life. However, due to pipeline corrosion, aging, anthropogenic causes and other reasons, pipeline leak which can cause serious environmental pollution and economic losses have occurred frequently in recent years.The purpose of this work is to design a pipeline leak detection system, which can be accurately and quickly find the pipeline leak point. This paper introduces several common pipeline leak detection’s algorithms. And thoroughly study the leak detection algorithm for delay estimation methods include generalized cross-correlation method and the least mean square adaptive filtering methods, and then use simulated signals and the actual pipeline data to analyse the feasibility and accuracy of the two algorithms. In the hardware part of the system, it contains selecting the appropriate sensors, designing the signal conditioning module,the data acquisition module and the CPU module. For the system software, code the generalized cross correlation method LMS method with Matlab and use LabVIEW to design the software as it has a rich library of controls and friendly interaction. The system’s software can be divided in four modules:the data receiver module, the data processing module, the front display module and the parameter setting module. And at the same time to deal with the historical data query, it uses the database to store pipe datas which the lower computer uploads. Finally, based on the existing experimental environment, it designs an experimental system to determine the final algorithm and verify the correctness of the system through a series of leaked data.
