With the rapid increase of population and the development of industry, the worldwide water crisis and water environment pollution are more and more apparent. With the increase of people’s environmental consciousness and environmental protection degree, water conservation, environmental protection and pollution control play the same important role. Therefore researching and developing a new environment-friendly copolymer scale inhibitor which is non-p Hosp Horus, nitrogenfree and biodegradable is an important research direction in the filed of water treatment.In this paper, the copolymerization of AA/MA/SSS was prepared by aqueous solution free radical polymerization method. In this reaction, AA(acrylic acid), MA(maleic anhydride) and SSS(styrene sulfonic sodium) acted as monomers, with the presence of ammonium persulfate as the initiator and isopropyl alcohol as the chain transfer. Under the static experiment conditions, the effect factors including the monomer molar ratio、amount of initiator、amount of chain-transfer agent、reaction temperature and reaction time on products’ scale inhibition property had been studied, according to the national standard method. The results showed that the AA/MA/SSS copolymer’s property of inhibiting calcium carbonate which reached 85.6% was the best under the following conditions: the monomer molar ratio(MA:AA:SSS) =4: 2: 1, the dosage of the initiator to the monomer quality at 10%, the dosage of chain-transfer agent to the monomer quality at 9%, the reaction temperature at 80 ℃and the reaction time at 4 h, and the AA/MA/SSS copolymer’s molecular weight was 8811, with a good temperature resistant property.The results of AA/MA/SSS copolymer’s scale inhibition property research showed that: AA/MA/SSS copolymer’s scale inhibition property to calcium carbonate reached 85.4% when the dosage was 30 mg/L; its scale inhibition property to calcium p Hosp Hate reached 80.2% when the dosage was 40 mg/L; its dispersing iron oxide property reached 65.4% when the dosage was 25 mg/L; its zinc stability property reached 70.9% when the dosage was 35 mg/L; in addition, the result of biodegradability experiment showed that AA/MA/SSS copolymer was a biodegradable copolymer.A preliminary discussion of AA/MA/SSS copolymer’s scale inhibition mechanism had been studied by comparing the changes of solution conductivity in the formation process of calcium carbonate, and the changes of calcium carbonate scale’s zeta potential、crystal morphology and categories, under the condition of adding and no adding AA/MA/SSS copolymer. The results showed that the scale inhibition mechanism of AA/MA/SSS copolymer were mainly in the following three aspects: ①it could chelate calcium ion, and increased calcium ion’s solubility; ②using adsorption, it could increase the scale particles surface’s negative charge, increase electrostatic repulsion between the scale particles, and prevent the scale particles conglomerating and growing up;③it could embed the internal of the scale particles, cause the scale particles’ s lattice distortion, and hinder the scale particles’ s further growth.
