The process of Decomposed Deposition and Sculpture (DDS) is a novel Rapid Prototyping process, which has not been studied by other universities or institutions in China. In this process, the layers are truly three dimensional in nature and are built using a combination of material addition and material removal processes. DDS possesses the characteristics of both the flexibility in RP and the accuracy in mechanical manufacturing. In this thesis, the studies about the software support for DDS are done on the base of characteristics of DDS. It mainly includes the three dimensional decomposition of a solid entity and the techniques in the generation of tool path.At first, this thesis gives the general design for the DDS soft. And two data structures about the major function of the soft are presented. In order to do the work and add flexibility to the soft, the algorithm to establish the topologic information and the algorithm to exactly select a STL solid or facet, vertex, edge in a STL solid are provided.Secondly, according to the process of DDS, the approach of truly three dimensional decomposition of STL solid is studied. Based on the criterion and the strategies given in the thesis, three methods to spatially decompose the STL solid are designed. And the algorithms are given in detail, too. Finally, to create tool path from a STL solid, some related questions are detailed lastly. These questions include such as slicing the STL solid, offsetting the contours, eliminating the self-interference and mutual interference in the offsetted contours, creating tool path from the offsetted contours, and so forth. And some novel or original, effective algorithms related to the tool path planning are developed.
