Levulinic acid (LA) can be prepared from biomass with large scale. Low cost LA can be used as a platform chemical for the production of a wide range of value-added products. In this paper, the six typical reactions of LA were reviewed, including salification, esterification, hydrogenation, condensation, oxidation and halogenation. Also, its applications in various fields were summarized. The production and new progress of LA using renewable resources as raw materials was introduced. Kinetics of glucose and wheat stalk decomposition with sulfuric acid as the catalyst by researched. In this paper kinetics of glucose decomposition with 1%, 3%,5% sulfuric acid was studied at temperature from 170℃ to 210℃.From the results, glucose can be decomposed easily with the increasing of temperature, the reaction rates increased sharply. The evaluated activation energy of glucose decomposition with 1%, 3%,5% sulfuric acid was 115.64KJ/mol,96.227KJ/mol,82.864KJ/mol, respectively. In addition, the effects of temperature and concentration of sulfuric acid on the concentration of LA and 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) were shown. In this paper, technological conditions of wheat stalk with low acid as catalyst was studied. We researched the effects of different solid-liquid ratio .. temperature concentration of sulfuric acid and time on the yield of LA, the optimum reaction conditions were obtained by Response Surface Analysis(RSA) as follows:3.6% sulfuric acid, 16:1 liquid-solid ratio, reacting at 210.2℃ for 31.6min.The product yields in reaction was 19.6%.In this paper, kinetics of wheat stalk decomposition with 1%, 3%, 5% sulfuric acid at 190℃,210℃,230℃ was studied, the reaction rate constant and activation energy had been got at different concentration of sulfuric acid. The kinetic model of wheat stalk decomposition was an consecutive reaction, the apparent activation energy with 1% sulfuric acid was 67.9KJ/mol,89.13 KJ/mol,36.38KJ/mol; the apparent activation energy with 3% sulfuric acid was 99.47J/mol,57.67KJ/mol,39.08KJ/mol; the apparent activation energy with 5% sulfuric acid was 84.11KJ/mol,64.32KJ/mol, 49.5KJ/mol.
