Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) is organic-inorganic and cubical hybrid materials,its abbreviation is (RSiO1.5)n. The special inorganic cage-structure and active functional organic group of POSS has fine effect on modifying polymer. The primary content of this paper is the synthesis of POSS with r-glycidyl-propyl-trimethoxysilane throught hydrolysis and condensation reaction and the modification of shape memory polyurethane(SMPU) with synthesized POSS.The structure of POSS is attributed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Nuclear magnetic resonance and Mass spectrography. Through measurements, inorganic cage-structure and hydroxy group in the structure of POSS are affirmed. The mechanical properties of modified SMPU with POSS have much enhanced in tensile strength, break elongation ratio and elastic modulus. Through the measurement of XRD and SEM, it is founded that the crystal and phase-separating of modified SMPU have all changed.Though these experiments, it is feasible to modify thermoplastic with POSS. The mechanical and thermal properties of modifed material have been enhanced. So POSS can widen the application of SMPU.
