The secondary clarifier is the important process of the sewage treatment,To improve their effectiveness will ensure the quality of water and improve the efficiency of treatment. However, It is impossible to full understand the rule in practice because the secondary clarifier have some rules such as time-varying, nonlinear , Complexity and so on. Therefore, this paper carry out the studies of mathematical model to sedimentation tanks, In order to guide the design and operation of sedimentation tank better in practice that useing the model means to understand the internal rules of sedimentation tanks.Looking back the development history of sedimentation tanks nearly a century. Used of simple and practical one-dimensional flux theory to establishment the corresponding mathematical model. And useing VB languagea with friendly man-machine interface to Program. Simulation the settlement process of the sedimentation tanks and use the model to simulate the data of actual treatment of the sewage treatment plant , and achieved the desired results. Although the one-dimensional model achieved wide range of success in practical application, but did not interpretation the complex flow patterns in the secondary sedimentation tanks. Therefore, do not improve and analysis its internal structure of the secondary sedimentation tank,so the papers used for computational fluid dynamics method to study the settling ponds. The use of CFD software FLUENT to simulation the three-dimensional flow field of sedimentation tanks, so that can be simulation and analysis the real flow in the secondary sedimentation designed, empirical model to one-dimensional layer model, analysis the practicality and limitations of all stages of development. Not only for the one-dimensional layer model to give an depth discussion from the mathematical view, but also for the existing model to give the comparison and analysis from a practical application, and pointed out the potential and direction of future development. This allows the secondary sedimentation tank in the design flow to achieve a true simulation and analysis, in order to assess and optimization the design program to minimize the practical problems. In this paper, the use of numerical simulation and physical simulation to study the sedimentation tank, Research shows that the use of these two methods can be carried out to a large extent on the optimal design of sedimentation tanks.
