The production of flexible roll forming is more and more applied in actual manufacture for its good mechanical properties. Slitting is a former procedure of flexible roll forming. Its feeding material process directly affects the product quality of subsequent process and production efficiency.Slitting machine, with the features of high production efficiency, stable quality and be suitable for quantity production, is an equipment used in industrial production and widely applied in slitting various metal sheet. The currently available slitting machine cannot achieve slitting any curve. Although some new-style processing methods, such as EDM machining and laser machine, can achieve shearing of arbitrary curve, it has high production cost. Thereby the research of flexible slitting machine has practical significance.According to all kinds of documents, most research progresses, either the study of shearing mechanism or the study of shearing trajectory, still stays in the scope of linear slitting or limited variable- width slitting, which cannot shear for arbitrary curve meeting the limitation of machining accuracy.This paper sets the flexible slitting machine as the research object, firstly ascertaining its slitting force parameters by virtual prototype technology, obtaining the calculation of displacement/velocity parameters of slitting five kinds of common boundary curves based on multi-body dynamics analysis, and then building the simplified model of slitting machine in the environment of ADAMS, analyzing its kinematics/dynamics, finally, verifying the result of multi-body dynamics analysis, providing data basis for servo control. Meanwhile, this paper establishes the finite element models for the knife shafts and gears in ANSYS which offers the environment for finite element analysis, and respectively analyses stress/strain for the knife shafts and gears, then optimizes the structure of the knife shafts.By theoretical analysis and simulation results, this paper demonstrates that the flexible slitting machine can realize shearing arbitrary curves for metal sheet, which meeting the demand of flexible roll forming. It saves time and material cost for manufacturing physical prototype by virtual prototype technology. At the same time, it obtains optimized structure of flexible slitting machine.
