The College English Curriculum Requirements published by the Ministry of Education in July,2007 requires "All the colleges and universities should make best use of modern information technology and adopt the computer-based and classroom-based teaching model, remoulding the existing unitary teacher—centered pattern of language teaching. The new teaching model should take advantage of the modern information technology, especially the web technology so that English teaching will be free from the constraints of time or place and geared towards students'individualized and autonomous learning."Therefore, it is essential for the teachers in distance education to explore the TV University English teaching model of combining multimedia-based autonomous learning with face-to-face instruction. In this paper, the author studies the teaching model through teaching practice, hoping to find an ideal English teaching model for the TV university students.This thesis consists of four parts. The first part is the introduction, which briefly introduces the research background, the purpose and the methodology of the study and the related literature review. The TV University English teaching model of combining multimedia-based autonomous learning with face-to-face instruction is based on the constructivism, Krash's Input and Output Theory and the autonomous learning theory and interactive and communicative theory of the distance education. The related theories are presented in the second part. The third part is the empirical study. The author arranges the experiment according to the teaching model pilot embodiment for This is English 1 published by the Central Radio and TV university. The students of 09 Administrative Management and 09 Computer Applied Technology in Zhabei Branch, Shanghai TV University participated in the study and they use teaching model of combining multimedia-based autonomous learning with face-to-face instruction while the students of 09 Accounting and Logistics use the traditional teaching model.The study conditions and the measures taken to make sure the implement of the new teaching model are first described. Then the author tries to find out the students'and the teachers'attitudes towards the teaching model by questionnaire, interviews and observation. Furthermore, the comparison of the final scores between the experimental group and the controlled group is made in order to testify the teaching effects of the new model. The last part is the results and reflection the study.The conclusion is that the new teaching model is very popular with the students and the teacher and that the students are very interested in the teaching model and they are satisfied with the teaching effects.The author thinks that the new teaching model improves the students'autonomous learning ability and the comprehensive proficiency. Meanwhile, there are some drawbacks for this teaching model, for instance, the TV University students'autonomous learning ability is poor and the lack of credibility and integrity. Some suggestions are put forward about how to solve the problem, such as strengthening the direction of the autonomous learning and enhancing the TV students'autonomous learning ability, changing the tutor's philosophy of teaching and teachers'role, strengthening the education of the credibility and integrity and well-equipped hard and soft infrastructure. Some limitations of this study and suggestions for future research are dealt with in the end.
