Optical spectroscopy for diagnosis of liver diseases was investigated in this paper. Laser-induced fluorescence and Raman spectra were measured from blood serum of liver cancer sufferers and rats in different stages of hepatic fibrosis, in an attempt to find some clues which can be used in diagnosis.Using 488.0nm and 514.5nm excitation of an Ar-ion laser, we studied twenty-one serum samples of liver cancer sufferers. Red shift of fluorescence peak and decrease of fluorescence intensity were observed after samples were radiated by laser. Of all the samples, two cases are characterized by three sharp distinct Raman peaks. Such results are consistent with what we obtained from other cancer cases in the past. However, there are also many differences between them. The diagnostic criteria drawn from other cancer cases cannot distinguish liver cancer from normal one effectively. It indicates that different cancers should be investigated respectively in order to find more accurate diagnostic criteria. In the study of hepatic fibrosis, spectral data were obtained from forty-eight rat serum samples. According to pathological result of liver tissue, samples were classified into six kinds. The spectral features of each kind were analysed. Result showed that mere was some difference between them, but not distinct. In addition, an application software was designed and accomplished in this article. Based on an A/D card, it can be used for controlling monochromator, sampling and processing data. The experiment operation is greatly facilitated by utilizing this software.
