Holism and patterns identification is a concept and method that has been accumulated and summarized for long-term clinical practice. It has played an extremely important role in the formation and development of Chinese medical theories. Everything has two aspects. Though patterns identification and different treatment has numerous advantages, it also has some limitations and defect, it needs to be further improved and upgraded. Therefore, some ancient doctors identified the disease on the basis of different treatment, in this premise, to replenish the defect of patterns identification and different treatment after extremely examining treatment and prescription.The theory of disease and patterns identification and different treatment is originated from"Huangdineijing"and 13 medical formulas were written in it,"Shanghanzabinglun"established therapeutic principles. Zhangzhongjing's original purpose is to combine disease identification and patterns identification. We can know that from the title,"Identify certain abnormal pulse pattern and treatment"."Shanghanlun"is named for six meridians, using different prescription treatment for different patterns and symptoms. It shows that Zhangzhongjing identified diseases first, and then identified patterns according to the symptoms.In previous studies, they have explained patterns identification and different treatment in detail. They, however, have not taken a serious view of disease identification and different treatment. I think it is necessary to do some basic work on the"Shanghanlun"------- studying disease name in it, if we want to further explore the relationship of disease and patterns of it.Studying disease name of the"Shanghanlun"helps to improve studying about the relation of disease with patterns of it; rules of disease identification and patterns identification; disease name standardization; it is also conducive to the standardization of clinical research and expand the academic exchanges with foreign countries.Concept of"Disease"in history: Analysis about the origins of Chinese characters, to understand the initial meaning characters of"illness"and"disease". I explore the concept of"disease", origin of the disease names and the relation of disease with patterns from"Shanhaijing","Zhouli","52Bingfang","Huangdineijing","Jinkuiyaolue","Zhouhoubeijifang","Zhubingyuanhoulun","Wenyilun"and"Yuyicao"as well as other related medical books in Ming and Qing Dynasty.Analysis the word"disease"in the"Shanghanlun": According to my statistics,"Shanghanlun"involved a total of 207 provisions about"disease". Analysis the meaning of the words, it includes four aspects: disease name, patients, refers to diseases and suffer(verb).Diseases name in the"Shanghanlun": There are lots of disease names in it. Analysis of them with a different method, in sum, they were named based on the etiology, pathogenesis, position and special clinical performance. Research of disease name in the"Shanghanlun": The disease names should have following characteristics and laws: used widely, rich content, embodies the characteristics of disease; Chinese medicine and disease, the patterns can have distinction. I chose Bentun, Reruxueshi, Piyue, Huoluan(intestinal conversion)and Shanghan(exogenous cold attack), 5 disease names as the object of study, and analysis transition of them in the process of development.To carry out research work better, I wrote three literature reviews . Review I: Summarizing Chinese disease names in a general diagnosis research. As the disease names of Chinese medicine have weakness, some of them are not suited to the needs of Modern clinical, and scientific integrity, their contents are also lagging far behind in the dialectic. It shows in 7 aspects. Review II: Summarizing present studying of the disease, and compare the different understanding of Modern and Chinese medicine. Review III: Summarizing research of the Chinese disease name standardization and significance of disease name normalization, principles and methods of it.
