Professor Tian Zhenguo has treated irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) for many years,andformed a series of distinct opinions on IBS..In his opinion, the constitutions of the patients anddegree of the pathogen are different, so the clinical symptoms and syndromes are various andcomplex. For this reason,the treatment strategy should be flexible.Generally speaking,there are four mechanisms of IBS. First, splenic asthenia is thefundamental cause of the disease.Second,hepatic stagnation is the subordinate appearance of thedisease.Third,hepatic stagnation and splenic asthenia are the basic mechanism. Fourth,disharmonybetween heart and spleen is the derivative syndrom of its major mechanism.There are six kinds of treatments:First, strengthen body resistance and invigorate the spleen,ascend the clear and descend the turbid. Second, restrain liver and invigorate the spleen, treat bothphysically and mentally.Third, use warming,clearing,purgation,astringent agilitily. Fourth,applicatedispelling as well as tonifying to make the qi function smoothing. Fifth,differentiate the concurrentsymptoms and syndromes carefully.Sixth, pay more attention to regulation when the states ofdisease relieve. In clinical application, In clinical application,we should make use of severaltreatments integritily and apply some treatment predominantly in some certain stage of the disease.In addition,regulation of psychology and mentality should be paid more attention to.Professor Tian Zhenguo's TCM treatment of IBS embody the flexible,steady anddifferentiating thoughts as well as the idea of following the traditional treatment andinnovation.The effect of the treatment is excellent.
