| OBJECTIVE To evaluate the therapeutic effect of Chinese medicine on thyroid-related eye disease III (TAO) compared with prednisone treatment and to find a new way for the treatment for TAO.METHODS 75 cases of Phase III of thyroid-related eye disease outpatients have been diagnosed in the hospital in 2006. 30 cases were selected in a row and divided into group A and B. Patients in group A were treated with Chinese medicine while group B were treated with prednisone. Patients were observed for three consecutive months. The CAS score, the upper eyelid retraction, the upper eyelid down late in the eye as well as sudden changes were evaluated after 1,2 and 3 months' treatment, respectively, thus clarifying the therapeutic effect of Chinese medicine on the TAO.RESULTS There were no significant differences as to CAS score, the upper eyelid retraction , the upper eyelid down late and exophthalmos at the beginning of treatment by the analysis of variance. After prednisone treatment for 1 and 2 months, obvious decrease was observed as to CAS score compared with group with Chinese Medicine treatment. However, there was no significant difference as to CAS score between the two groups after treatment for 3 months. In addition, the CAS value decreased in both groups after treatment for various period of time. However, there was no significant difference as to upper eyelid retraction and the upper eyelid down late after treatment for different time for both groups. Significant difference was observed for both groups two months after treatment. Importantly, no significant difference was observed as to exophthalmos for both groups after treatment in the first two months. However, significant change was found in group of Chinese medicine treatment but not prednisone treatment after 3 months. Two cases of patients of the Chinese Medicines revealed symptoms with allergic reactions bot no other side effects whereas there were obesity and drug eruptions, and other side effects in prednisone group. CONCLUSIONS Long-term effects of CAS score, the upper eyelid retraction and the upper eyelid late for Chinese Medicine treatment was similar to that of prednisone treatment in patients with Category III of thyroid-related eye disease. However, Chinese Medicine treatment is worse than prednisolone treatment as to short-term effect. But Chinese Medicine treatment is more effective as to the treatment of exophthalmos as well as fewer side effects than that of prednisolone. |
