Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a preventable and treatable disease state characterized by airflow limitation that is not fully reversible. The airflow limitation is usually progressive and is associated with an abnormal inflammatory response of the lungs to noxious particles or gases, primarily cause by cigarette smoking. Chinese medicine has a lot of experiences to treat and prevent COPD.In this article, three parts are include. One is the literature review, One is theoretical study, and one is clinical study. literature reviewWe summarize the opinions about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) from ancientry to today. This paper include the historical names, symptom, pathogenic, mechanism and treatment and so on. The second paper is based on the (GOLD) , and combined with its up-to-date research progress. A survey of COPD was made in detail in terms of its concept, risk factors, etiology and pathology, manifestation, diagnosis and classification and so on.Theoretical studyBased on review of previous clinical experience and literature data, we discovered a great deal of unreasonable phenomena in the present clinical application of Chinese patent medicine. In this study, many problems in application of Chinese patent medicine were revealed by some details of Chinese patent medicine for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in many aspects including formulation, indications, the compatibility law of Chinese patent medicines, the compatibility law of Chinese patent medicine and west medicine, the relationship of Chinese patent medicine and diet, adverse reactions and principles for medication safety.Clinical studyThe present application status of Chinese patent medicine in the treatment of COPD was investigated in clinic. The questionnaire was made for collecting data from sixty six cases up to inclusive criteria to study the category, classification according to function and application of Chinese patent medicine. The principles for application of Chinese patent medicine were analyzed from the view of relationship between drug selection and different syndromes as well as disease severity. The present study suggested that the application of most Chinese patent medicine using the principle of differentiation and treatment of disease or symptom instead of syndrome differentiation and treatment, which verified the conclusion of above theoretical study.
