| METHODS:Both eyes of each of 20 New Zealand white rabbits(five animals per treatment group randomly selected)were observed without scarification. Each group of both eyes receiving ACV (3% Zovirax ophthalmic ointment), Mu Anne (5% honey ophthalmic ointment), Mu Anne (10% honey ophthalmic ointment),matrix and Mu Anne (15% honey ophthalmic ointment) with 0.1 mg respectively three times per day (8 a.m., 12 a.m and 4 p.m.) for 4 consecutive days,matrix as placebo group. On day 1 post-external-application,all eyes were examined by slit-lamp biomicroscopy in everyday for 7 consecutive days.For comparative study, 20 rabbits (five animals per treatment group) infected with HSV-1 (McKrae strain) received coded drug treatments beginning on day 1 post-inoculation successfully.which receiving either ACV (3%Zovirax ophthalmic ointment), Mu Anne (5% honey ophthalmic ointment), Mu Anne (10% honey ophthalmic ointment),or matrix(placebo). All corneas were treated topically with 0.1 mg of the appropriate drug three times per day (8 a.m.,12 a.m and 4 p.m.), which examed the severity of corneal epithelial involvement, conjunctivitis, iritis, and corneal clouding by slit-lamp biomicroscopy for 15 consecutive days. On day 8 and 15 post-inoculation,one rabbit was selected for preparation of electron microscope specimens,which was the mean degree of severity of corneal epithelial involvement.RESULTS:Mu Anne (5% honey ophthalmic ointment) group was with the light sensibility of eyes,and has no difference with placebo group(P>0.05); Mu Anne (10% honey ophthalmic ointment) group was with severity sensibility and magnificent difference (P<0.01);Mu Anne (10% honey ophthalmic ointment) group was middle sensibility and magnificent difference (P<0.01). The scores of corneal with Mu Anne (5% honey ophthalmic ointment) group has magnificent difference with placebo group(P<0.01).The result of electron microscope was that Mu Anne (5% honey ophthalmic ointment) group could pretect corneal from damage of HSV.CONCLUSIONS:Available composition from honey are expected further to purified and analysed, which makes the components of Mu Anne ointment effective. |
