Yu Jiayan is a well-known medical practitioner in recent decades. Yu studied Confucianism in early years, followed by Buddhism in his middle age, then resumed secular life to practice medicine with a mission to revitalize Chinese medicine. Yu highly respects Zhang Zhongjing and names his book-Shang Han Lun/Treatise on Febrile Diseases《伤寒论》as"the master of medical classics, the origin of medical treatment and the ancestor of prescription." Following Fang Youzhi's Shang Han Lun Tiao Bian《伤寒论条辨》,Yuinnovated and recompiled the Shang Han Lun based on his academic thought of "the importance of three outlines" as well as using six meridian as principle and 397 methods as sections, hence completed the work of Shang Lun Pian《尚论篇》.The "recompilation" initiated by Fang Youzhi and Yu Jiayan has become one of the essential school of thoughts of Shang Han Lun research in following generations.Yu Jiayan proposes:to study Traditional Chinese Medicine, first it is needed to understand classical works, such as Nei Jing《内经》and Shang Han Lun, then pick the strengths among all of them. Yu also emphasizes the importance of combining theory with practice, and exploring the regular pattern of syndrome differentiation and treatment. This research paper mainly focuses on studying the two medical books written by Yu Jiayan-Shang Lun Pian and Yuyi Cao《寓意草》,and integrates the relevant views of Shang Han Lun from Medical Laws《医门法律》.This research also sums up Yu's Shang Han Lun in different aspects, including Yu's special views, academic achievement, as well as the classical prescription use of Shang Han Lun, the use of medication, the unique interpretation of six meridian syndromes, and innovative method of articles compilation. Yu's footprint in clinical practice and research style of "respect classics without blind follow" cause far reaching impact on the development of Shang Han Lun and other Chinese medicine studies. Apart from systematically analyzing the inheritance and development of Yu Jiayan's academic views, this paper also points out the areas needed for discussion, which can be a new direction for future research on Shang Han Lun.This paper is mainly divided into three parts:1) Yu Jiayan's biography, medical works and academic origin; 2) Discussion on the theory and standpoints of Shang Han Lun; and 3) Discussion based on Yu's clinical experience relative to the original text of Shang Han Lun.
