Opera "the Sun Snow" Literary Script And Music Creation Features

Opera The Sun Snow was staged in June 2009 in Beijing by the PLA General Political Department Opera Troupe to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of People's Republic of China and to participate in the Ninth Army Arts Festival. Based on Qiu Shan-shan's novel Waiting for You in Heaven, the opera has great originality and characteristic on libretto and music. This thesis is trying to research the libretto and music characteristics of opera The Sun Snow according to the following aspect:opera libretto, score, and audio-visual data analysis. The writer hopes this thesis could be a great significance to the research of opera The Sun Snow and the creation and development of the Chinese military opera.Opera The Sun Snow chooses the partial contents from the original novel and tells a story about the female soldiers in the Transport Team of the Eighteenth Army entered Tibet by foot in 1950's. Its dramatic structure seems likely as variation-type rondo form as music and its subject is to praise the spirit of soldiers for keeping the faith and pursuit of the ideal. The libretto gives full play to the theatricality of the opera music. One of the music characteristics of the opera is to use music leitmotivs which is running through the whole opera music and embodying the theme of the opera. On creating characters with music, the diva has a portrayal of the history of her growth, and the other figures are in group to shape the sublime image of Chinese military personnel. The opera music is created on absorbing elements of national music, employing Chinese-western composing techniques and the diversity of musical expressions. With the noble theme, distinctive national features and the popular aesthetic connotation, opera The Sun Snow is one of the outstanding military art works of our century.
