During mid-19th century to early 20th century, as in the context of the introduction of Western Geography and the exchange between Chinese and Western Geography, the geography knowledge constantly updated, the geographic thought and research methods continue to change, the geography books continue to popularize, which laid a solid foundation for Chinese Geography transformation from tradition to modern. Therefore, it is largely depends on the research of geographic translation to understand the development of Modern Chinese geography. But the Map Illustration in Late Qing Dynasty, as an important document for dissemination of geographic knowledge, did not get enough attention.In Late Qing Dynasty, the West book publishers in China can be divided into three types according to the nature of institutions:the missionaries system, government system and civil system. The Map Illustration in Late Qing Dynasty can also be divided into these three categories according to the nature of the publish institutions. However, due to the wide variety of the Map Illustrations, this thesis has not researched and described about all of these documents. Therefore, it just selected several representative publications from the above three translation institutions, and did a comparative study of some relevant geographic literature in the contemporary. That is, the missionaries system- Xujiahui Printing House of the "Wu Zhou Tu Kao",the government system- Kiangnan Arsenal "Hai Dao Tu Shuo" and "the New Translation of China Sea Directory" and the civil system- "Zhong Wai Yu Di Quan Tu" for the center of discussion. So this thesis, by doing the research on these modern representative Map Illustrations, clarify the role of the Map Illustrations in the history of Chinese modern geography.
