The Struggle Between Reality And The Ideal Of The "sphinx" - Junction Marked Early Creation

Zhangkebiao, who has been active in 1920s-1930s of Shanghai's literary circles, was a writer, translator and editor. He had created many works with different kinds of forms. However, there were almost no recorder about him and his works in the former literature history. Nowadays, with the attention of the study about Shanghai-School Culture or literature and Decadent doctrine, this writer sprang up after long-timely neglected. Zhangkebiao played a comparatively important role in the creation of Chinese Modern Novel, the production of Chinese Modern Essay and the introduction of Japanese literature. Zhangkebiao was an important member of Shihou-Jinwu organization with decadence. The themes of those works published on these monthly magazines of Shihou and Jinwu showed us romantic passions. We can find out some trends of new-generation's romantic novel creation. Zhangkebiao also was one of the essay writers among Shengbao ziyoutan and Lunyu. He was especially interested in Japanese Modern Literature, so he introduced and translated a large number of Japanese writers and their works.The intention of my thesis is to combine his early life condition in Shanghai and his real course involving Wangjingwei's Government. 1 also give some comments about the features of his novels and try to express and shape his attitude of writing and live show about this Shanghai-School Writer. Zhangkebiao in the early stage was just like the self-division Sphinx. Sphinx is an ancient Egyptian animal with half lion's body and half divine's face, it possesses an ideal higher than sky, but it can't move away from the earth. Zhangkebiao, hesitating between idea! and reality, seemed to be very anxious like Sphinx.
