In Chinese language, taboo words, euphemism, and words for luck, the three linguistic phenomena with abundant vocabulary each, are vividly feature by the culture and psychology of Han nationality. They are studied respectively in quite a lot of academic works. However, a joint account of them will not only further the analysis of the psychological mechanism behind them but also specify the cultural character of each phenomenon. With similar or identical socio-psychological foundation, cultural qualities, and cultural functions, they share common grounds in existence, conformation, characters, and mechanism of culture transmission. Based on this consideration, this thesis makes a joint account of these three phenomena.The thesis comprises four parts. Part one discusses the cultural characters and cultural functions shared by taboo words, euphemism, and words for good luck. In the first place, they enjoy the same socio-psychological foundations: the superstition about the "magic" of language, as well as the identical purpose: pursuing good fortune and avoiding disaster. Secondly, they have the same subsequent development and major functions: the superstition about this "magic" fades with the development of social civilization while the pressure and dominance from society that they encounter increase. And each of them functions mainly for human communication and the adjustment of human relations. Thirdly, they share the common cultural values, the senses towards happiness and aesthetics in particular. Fourthly, one of them will be the cause and effect of another in the real life, so they will relate to each other in use.Part two argues about their existence. They exist, firstly, in daily life such as clothing, food, housing transportation, daily facilities, birth, death, aging, illness, body organs, sex conducts, and excretion, secondly, in social activities like marriage, funeral, sociality, celebrations for festivals and holidays, thirdly, in all walks of life including agriculture, industry, and commerce, and, fourthly, in religion such as primitive religion, Taoism, Buddhism, and Islam.Part three probes their formation and characters. In terms of formation, their forms and ways of expression are discussed. In terms of character, such characters are mentioned as nation, region, times, relativity, extension as well as the character of class and group of some vocabulary.Part four analyzes the mechanism of culture transmission, firstly, on context for linguistic communication, secondly, on cultural concept including religion, feudal code and stratum, good and evil, beauty and ugliness, as well, thirdly, on cultural-psychology such as pursing good or "reputation", colony or "harmony", benefit and "virtue".The creativity of this thesis lies in the angle of its topic selection and discussion, theoretical framework of demonstration, most arguments, and some quoted data. More specifically, part one and part four bring forward new opinions, which are regarded as the major results. Based on the previous studies, part two and part three extend their ideas after the induction of the previous data and arguments plus the author's own data and thoughts.
