This research focused on the role of morpheme position frequency which includes both first-character position frequency and second-character position frequency in the process of two-character Chinese compound words. Two experiments were conducted with the subjects whose native language was Chinese and two Japanese groups of those who learned Chinese as a second language. All the word materials used in these two experiments were fake words, whose two morphemes were combined to different types according to their own morpheme position frequencies. Chinese word material only was used for comparison. The conclusions are: (1) Morpheme position frequency plays a good role in the process of two-character Chinese compound words. It becomes the core factor of morphological awareness of Chinese learners. (2) There exist different stages on developing morphological awareness of Chinese compound word in the process of Chinese acquisition as a second language.
