Michel Ryquem de Montaigne was one of the giants in the Renaissance of Francein the 16 century. He invented the new prose types--essay, and because of this heand his essays have always been the focus of the world's attention. But most of the scholars focus on such respects as literature, philosophy, education, aesthetics, life ethics etc and pay little attention to his historical thoughts permeating through Montaigne's essays. In fact, his relativistic conception of history, psychology and anthropology historical methods are of extraordinary significance' for the development of the modern even our tune's historiography. This text attempts to do some discussions in this respect, and is in the hope of resuming Montaigne's due status in the history of western historiography.The whole text is divided in five parts:The preface has introduced Montaigne's life and the general studies about Montaigne done in the fields both at home and abroad, and has expounded the necessity to study Montaigne's historical thoughts.The first and second parts have summarized Montaigne's historical thoughts through analyzing essays and other firsthand information. The first part has described Montaigne's conception of history from three respects: historical relativism , cultural relativism and religious relativism; the second part has explained his application of the psychology and anthropology to historiography.The third part has analyzed the reasons that his historical thoughts came into being from five respects: the background, the forefathers' influence, scientific discoveries, family influence and personal reasons on the basis of understanding him in an all-round way.The fourth part has expounded Montaigne's influence from the 17th century to our times, and has commented on his historical thoughts briefly with the clue of time.
