Shostakovich String Quartet Polyphonic Writing

This essay consists of three chapters, introduction, polyphony techniques in the Shostakovich' s String Quartets and the continuation, development, creativity in the polyphony by Shotakovich.The first chapter consists of four sections.It outlined the life,polyphonic techniques and String Quartets of Shostakovich and accounts briefly Shostakovich' s compositions during three periods.The second chapter analyses the polyphonic techniques of Shostakovich' s String Quartets. It is made up of five sections, counterpoint, imitation polyphony, rhythm characters and harmony characters. The third chapter discusses continuation, development, creativity of the polyphonic forms and patterns in Shostakovich' s music. The chapter gives a brief account to the relationships of Bach and Shostakovich in theirs works and outlined polyphonic techniques by the other composers in the same period of Shostakovich. Simultaneously,the chaper discusses the development and creativity of polyphony by Shostakovich, emphasis Shostakovich' s contributions and status in the development history of polyphony.
