As a universal phenomenon in every language, positive/negative category plays an important role in human's cognitive and communicative activities and Russian is not an exception. In modern Russian, many researchers conduct studies on positive/negative category as an important semantic category. Some of those studies are relatively advanced, but most of them are not systematic and integral but fragmentary. In view of the university and complexity of positive/negative category in language, and the practicality in foreign language teaching, this thesis collects large quantity samples with the method of theory to practice and meaning to form; on the basis of theories of cognitive and functional linguistics, this thesis carefully analyzes and describes semantic types and techniques of expressing positive/negative in modern Russian. Although this thesis can not give an advanced and whole interpretation of this topic, and it only conducts a primary study and conclusion, the thesis is, however, meaningful to the expression and comprehension of positive/negative category of students and to the Russian teaching.There are five parts in this thesis:IntroductionThis part briefly introduces study background of positive/negative category, and points out the significance of studying positive/negative category in this thesis.First,Theoretical basis of positive/negative category studySome discussion of the theoretical basis—cognitive and functional linguistics—of positive/negative category is presented in this part.Second,Positive/negative category and modal meaningThis part defines the positive/negative meaning and its modality, and discusses the relationship of them; it also gives a particular description of the modal semantic types of positive/negative category in verbal communication.Third,Techniques of expressing positive/negative meaningA large quantity of samples is employed in this part to give a detail discussion about the techniques of expression positive and negative.Fourth,Pragmatic rhetorical functions of positive/negative categoryThis part summarizes the pragmatic rhetorical functions of positive/negative category: increasing expressive force of utterance and tactful expression of meaning.Fifth,Significance to Russian teaching of positive/negative categoryThis part points out the practical significance of this topic to the Russian teaching.
