Measure Word is "the unit of a thing or a movement." It's a special one of Chinese word classes and can be divided into Noun Measure Word, Verb Measure Word and Compound Measure Word. Among them, Noun Measure Word is the main part of the whole Measure Word's system, and it has most features of that system, that's why it is the first kind of Measure Word that people discovered.A lot of researches about Chinese Measure Word have been made, but only a few had been done in a functional way, which can show the big difference between Chinese Measure Word and measure forms of other languages. This thesis will discuss about Chinese Measure Word's different functions.In this thesis, first we classify Chinese Measure Words according to different criterions, then summarize the researches that have been made by linguists —such as the collocations of Chinese Measure Word, the main reduplications of it (includes the grammatical meanings of Chinese Measure Word, the conditions of their reduplications should meet, the syntactic constituents it can play, and the differences of the three reduplications). Then the thesis discusses why Chinese Measure Word is so special, and deduces the reasons of it exist. And how Chinese Measure Word came into being.We pay more attention to the functions of Chinese Noun Measure Word, so the main part of the thesis is about the function: the main function of it is to show quantities, but there are more functions like classify function, qualify function, the function that restrict grammatical structures, the function of coordinate rhyme etc, and just these functions make Chinese Noun Measure Word so different. So we analyse these functions carefully, try to show how different functions influence the usages of Chinese Noun Measure Word.In this thesis, we also notice the difficulties of second language learnersmeet, when they learn Chinese Noun Measure Word, and we separate students into different groups according to their native language, try to find the different difficulties they would meet during the course of their study, and analyse how Chinese Measure Noun Word's functions can help them, make their study easier. Provide some new ways to teach.At the end of this thesis, we give some explanations on some questions about Chinese Measure Word's teaching, which were made by some teachers and points out something which needs further study.As a whole, this thesis mainly discusses the different functions of Chinese Noun Measure Word in theoretical way and applied way, hope it can give another research method in Chinese Measure Word.
