Since Austin and Searle propose their speech act theories respectively, linguists have already conducted detailed studies on speech acts: requesting, apologizing, complimenting and refusing etc. Complaining is one of speech acts that is worth to study; it is an important topic in pragmatics. As the development of the research on speech acts, some researchers have conducted some studies on complaining, research on Russian, however, is not advanced. So, it is necessary to study on the complaining in Russian.There are five parts in this thesis:Chapter one introduces the basic ideas of speech act theory. This part is the theoretical background of the whole thesis, and it introduces the background of the creation of speech act theory: Austin creates the speech act theory, and makes great effort for its development. However, there are still many points to be discussed; American philosopher Searl develops Austin's theory systematically. He points out all the conditions of speech act theory and gives the rational principle and standard of the taxonomy of speech act and then he proposes the indirect speech act theory.Chapter two discusses the direct complaint and indirect complaint. Complaining is the expression of dissatisfaction and unhappiness by the speaker because of acts that bring disbenefit to him. It is a face threatening act, and there are some conditions for the realization of complaining: the speaker can choose to be give up, that is giving no complaining or can choose to complain directly or indirectly; or he can give compensation while complaining. So the speaker can make complains in different ways and social status, social distance, whether there being contract, levels of expectation and sex all affect the choice of complainer.Politeness strategies of complaining are introduced in chapter three. As complaining is a face-threatening behavior, people will employ some politeness strategies while complaining in order to avoid threatening others'face and raising contradiction or the broken of communication.In chapter four, the replies of complaint will be discussed. According to the discourse analysis theory, complaint is only the first part of the adjacency pairs, and the second part of complaining: replying is also very important. This chapter will introduce the replying of the hearer to the direct and indirect complaints.Conclusion part summarizes the whole thesis briefly.In the verbal communication, the same language form can have different functions for different communicative environments; different language forms can achieve the same communicative purpose.
