William Shakespeare is one of the greatest playwrights and poets in the Renaissance England. Though he is famous for his plays his sonnets are among the world's finest written poetry. It is commonly thought that his sonnets were created between 1592 and 1598, and there are 154 sonnets in all. They may be roughly divided into three groups. Numbers 1—126 seem to be addressed to young nobleman, a patron and friend; numbers 127—152 to his mistress, the so-called "Dark Lady". 153—154 are unrelated to the principal themes of the cycle. When Thomas Thorpe published Shakespeare's Sonnets in 1609 they are the focus of the critics. They are essential, for they offer him a personal glimpse of the poet of Stratford. The critics have spent too much time searching for possible clues to "the lovely boy, I, the dark lady and the poet's rival" for about four centuries. But different people have different opinions of these problems in the sonnets. The writer of the thesis tries to interpret the philosophy of Shakespeare's sonnets of the Renaissance from Petrarch on; and analyses the soul of the sonnets, that is, "the beauty and love". In these sonnets, Shakespeare accounts for his hope for the unity of beauty, truth and goodness. And he tries to keep the beauty and love immortal through battling with times and ugliness in his sonnets. Shakespeare's Sonnets are great because they speak to all men at all times about the beauty and love.
