Owing to changes in social environment and in the world structure, many new thoughts came into being between 19th and 20th centuries. As a result, artists have been encouraged to devote themselves to the most appropriate approach to create their own unique works. In such a context, gradually the combination of various categories across fields of art became influential of the period. Therefore music was unavoidably affected by the trend and promoted fundamentally from form to connotation by hybridizing with other artistic forms. One of the most common methods is the combination of music and literature.Taking Benjamin Britten's Songs from the Chinese as the subject under research, the author of the thesis aims to discuss the influence of English and American Imagist Poetry Campaign on Britten and to describe how he presented in his music the literariness of the imagist poetry by analyzing specific examples in his works. The thesis consists of six parts including introduction and conclusion. The fist part in the main body introduces the background of Songs of the Chinese, especially the work's origin in the poetry. Second part focuses on the analysis of the words. The author of the thesis claims that words should be considered as the connection between Songs from the Chinese and English and American Imagist Poetry Campaign. The third part explores the essential characteristics of the work—it is the musical interpretation of imagist poetry. Finally, the author of the thesis assesses the merits and connotation of the work and tries to re-establish its position in the combination of literature and music.
