Benjamin Britten(1913.11.22—1976.12.4) is one of the most outstanding English composers who have won a significant international reputation. He lived in a period of the 20th century when all kinds of musical ideas and musical schools are in their full bloom. With no extremely unusual character of his contemporaries, Britten can use freely some of the new musical expressive techniques of the 20th century, and thus forms his own unique style of taking in everything and synthesizing them. He always insists on the principle that music should be pleasing to the ears of the mass.War Requiem is the last orchestra composed by Britten. It expresses the composer's hatred for wars and his sympathy for the innocent people who have died in wars. The specific times Britten lived in helps develop his unique music style and enables him to have a deeper understanding of life. By analyzing War Requiem. This thesis intends to appreciate Britten's composing mentality and techniques, learn from him how to deal with the relationship between tradition and creation, and how to weave religious genres and English poems into musical composition. War Requiem is of significant importance in the music history of both Great Britain and the world.
