Compared with the Meaning of Chinese Characters (abbr.MCC ), the book Guide to the Meaning of Chinese Characters (abbr. GMCC)by Xu Kai has many new meanings which are quite different from the former one. This paper aims to analyze these new meanings. The paper is divided into five parts:Introduction: In this part, we review the contents and characteristics of GMCC analyzed by different researchers. Later, I put forward what this paper deals with—the new senses originating from MCC by Xu Shen.Chapter I Extended Meaning in GMCCHere are two methods to decide the extended meaning: one is to fix the original meaning of a word, the other is to distinguish an extended meaning, borrowing meaning and meanings attached to none of the above. Supported by a large quantity of examples, this chapter analyzes extended meaning from three aspects, including the way the extended meaning appears, the route and commonly used terms. The way mentioned has mainly five kinds:延展引申(extension),condition extension, allegory extension, vicinity extension, the part of speech extension. The route includes three kinds such as extending directly, extending by the examples and using other dictionary. The extended meanings have used the comparatively consistent terms, and they have diverse characteristics and usages respectively.Chapter II Borrowed Meanings in GMCCThe definition of a borrowed meaning is to determine a borrowed word. The process is to fine two characters whose pronunciations are identical or close, but their meanings are quite different. Supported by a large quantity of evidences, this chapter analyzes borrowed meaning by classifications, ways and patterns. Borrowed meanings include coinage and temporary solution. GMCC signals such borrowed meanings by Benzi or Jiezi, while explaining the meanings by citing classical works, indicating directly and two other methods. Definitely, readers should pay close attention to some special borrowed meanings.Chapter III Other New Meanings in GMCCThe other meanings include meanings attached to none of the above, lacking meaning, querying or correcting explanation. Meanings attached to none of the above refer to the same word without a tiny bit connection in meaning. They give first place to the proper noun, and include some original meanings, extended meaning and borrowed meaning. Guide to the Meaning of Chinese Characters have supplemented阙遗字'上讳字(the lose a character and upper taboo of fault character significance), and have queried or corrected some items in MCC.ConclusionThis paper analyzes Guide to the Meaning of Chinese Characters from a new point of view, and makes a tentative summary and collection. In my opinion, Xu Kai opens up a new field at researching MCC.
