Multi-purpose Adverb "on The Multi-dimensional

In modern Chinese, "jiu" is a common word with an extremely high use frequency.It has a complex function and can be used as an adverb, a conjunction, a preposition, averb and a morpheme which can form a word and so on. Its use as an adverb takes up theprincipal position. "jiu" may be divided into several sub-classes used as an adverb,including the scope adverb, the time adverb, the modality adverb and the connectionadverb. This thesis has a comprehensive research of the use of the first threesub-classes according to the syntactic patterns, the semantic orientation, the weight, thefocus, the subjective-quantity and other aspects of the adverb "jiu".The thesis is composed of six parts in all, and the detailed contents as follows:Chapter One introduces the object, purpose, significance, methods of the researchand sources of language material briefly.Chapter Two summarizes the research achievements of the multi-functional adverb"jiu" from our predecessors in three aspects of synchronous and diaehronic study of theadverb "jiu" and the explanation of the adverb "jiu" in a lexicographical work.Chapter Three studies the scope adverb "jiu" according to its definition in twoaspects of quantity and scope as well as combining the syntactic patterns of the scopeadverb "jiu".Chapter Four analyzes the time definition of non-perfect events and perfect eventsfrom the time adverb "jiu". The time adverb "jiu" shows complexity when it has themeaning of time named "continuity". It can be used not only for perfect events, but fornon-perfect events. This chapter specially discusses the use of the meaning of timenamed "continuity".Chapter Five studies the modality adverb "jiu" in three aspects of its syntax and itsdistribution of sentence categories, modality transmission and the marked topic focus.Chapter Six discusses the adverb "jiu" and the expression of subjective quantity,analyzes the cause of semanteme of the adverb "jiu" when expressing "subjective littlequantity" and "subjective great quantity". In this foundation explains the adverb "jiu"each usage between intrinsic connection in the single-sentence scope.The last part is the concluding remarks, and we sum up the opinions and point outthe deficiencies of the thesis.
