Musical education in institutions of higher education has developed rapidly in China during recent years. In the notice of "Guidance for Public Arts Courses in Institutes of Higher Education" printed and distributed by Office of Ministry of Education in March 2006, musical appreciative course was definitely defined as artistic limited selective course. Teaching materials are educational instruments as well as teaching tools, the quality of which can directly affect the aim and effect of musical education in regular institutions of higher education.This thesis has selected three teaching materials recommended by Department of Physical Sanitation and Arts of Ministry of Education and University Musical Education Association including Basic Course of Musical Appreciation edited by Kuang Hui, University Comprehensive Musical Teaching Material edited by Zeng Yan-xuan and Musical Appreciation (the second edition in January 2006) edited by Wang Yao-hua and Wu Xiang-tao. This thesis has employed means of bibliographic analysis and book information, survey and research, comparative study, diagram illustration and experience summary to compare, analyze and summarize their editing ideology, structure, contents, specific appreciative melodies and characteristics, and hence put forward constructive ideas and suggestions in order to provide authentic theoretical basis and references for the construction of teaching materials of public music appreciation in institutions of higher education, future edition of teaching materials and appreciative teaching and further development of pubic music education.The thesis has three chapters. Chapter one looks back on the general development of musical education, classes of musical appreciation and teaching materials of musical appreciation in Chinese institutions of higher education. Chapter two briefly investigates and analyzes current use of musical appreciative teaching materials. Chapter three is the main body of this thesis, which compares and analyzes three musical appreciative teaching materials in Chinese institutions of higher education and puts forward some opinions and suggestions for future edition and construction of musical teaching materials on the basis of experience summary.
