Andersen's fairy tales have been world-famous for a long time, but the Chinese elements of them has always been neglected. Monographs worldwide on Andersen are not in scarcity. Even in China, though it couldn't be considered as a hot research area, there are some people who know the value of Andersen's fairy tales very well after all. However in present domestic papers, researchs in this angle about the academic issues of Andersen's fairy tales like this thesis haven't been seen before in spite of something related to Chinese elements in Western literature. This thesis starts with brief introduction of popularity and influence of Andersen's fairy tales in China, explains the related backgroud and characters, touchs on intercommunication between China and Europe at that time, investigates descriptions about China in Andersen and other foreign writers'words, analyzes in depth several main and minor Chinese elements in Andersen's writings, such as the Great Wall, chinaware, tea, as well as some direct and indirect descriptions of Chinese life and personality. This thesis tries to dig into Andersen's fairy tales renewedly, then peeks into the way of West looking on China at all times through pondering over the imaginary China in Andersen's writings, thereby makes suggestions to the attitude which China holds in Western literature research. As one important link of the cultural exchanging chain between China and Western countries, Andersen's fairy tales certainly have unique research value. Cutting in literature and studying the different views and attitudes due to different civilizations is also a senseful work. Now in the tide of China's Reform and Opening up and in the course of our emphasizing on economic development and paying attention to foreign exchanges, it will be very helpful to better mutual understanding and beneficial cooperation, if we are objective and calm, alert to ultranationalism, and at the same time avoid using all kinds of Western theoretic exotics one-sidedly or blindly.
