The present thesis focuses on the meanings of compound verb which consists of two verbs in the form of "verb + verb" in Japanese. Although seemingly easy to understand, compound verb is not as easy as combining two verbs directly. In most cases, the complicated process of combining two verbs is very hard to figure out, though each verb alone is rather familiar to learners. To solve this dilemma, the present thesis selects one highly productive precedent verb of compound verb, and analyzes its meanings. In the main body of the thesis, the prototype theory and core diagram theory are discussed in great detail, making it possible to give a further explanation for the meanings of precedent verb. It is suggested to integrate various meanings of the precedent verb into a system, which is important to lower the difficulty of understanding the meanings.Secondly, compound verbs have a polysemous verb as precedent verb are classified into four categories, in terms of which learners can figure out which category does each word in this thesis belong to, thus making it more likely to judge the meanings in an easy way. Finally, the above-mentioned method is applied in analyzing the compound verbs which has another polysemous verb as precedent verb so as to sort out an array of words of the same characteristic with success. In so doing, the validity of analyzing the meanings of other kinds of compound verb is proved.
