Soul Where

The history of Chinese literature in the 20th century, seen from a certain angle, is the struggle, resistance and oppression of the intellectuals, the "exile" history of the intellectuals from the center to the edge. From the idea of national salvation during "the May 4^th movement" period, to the "silence" at the medium-term, to the exile at the end of the 20th century, the changing of the world and the role of the intellectuals make their hearts subject to great trauma. Especially since the 1990s, under the new social circumstances, the legitimation of the market and the rapid change of the mass tastes make their role change again and make them at a loss. This paper, on the basis of objectively summarizing the spirit evolution of the intellectuals in the 20th century, emphasizes spiritual change of the intellectuals since the 1990s. By analyzing the intellectual case in Cong Lang Zhi Shui, this paper tries to find a way out for the intellectuals. This paper includes three parts:Part One is a Summary of the intellectuals' spirit transmutation in the 20th century. It is mainly divided into three aspects: Firstly, the source of modern Chinese intellectuals and their characteristics; secondly, the commitment of intellectuals at the first ten years of 20th century, taking Lu Xun as an example; thirdly, the conditions of the intellectuals since 1949,including the intellectuals' silence in the special period—"Cultural Revolution".Part Two, main part of the paper, relates that life can not bear the lightness . Since the 1990s, enlightenment consciousness becomes silent again after a flash in a pan in the 80's. Humanity intellectuals have lost the guide function of spirit in the past, and some are suffering from the loss sliding toward the edge from the center. The analysis is divided into three aspects: Firstly, the context of the development of literature itself, the result of its development to a specific era; secondly, multi-cultural atmosphere, the prosperity of popular literature, leading to the decline of elite literary; thirdly, the performance of intellectuals in this special period , some adhere to the spirit, while others have different choices. Part Three discusses where the soul is going? From the role of enlightenment at the beginning of the 20^th century, to the transformation at the mid-term, to the loss at the end of 20^th century, the intellectuals are facing a pressing issue about what course they should follow. And this paper, by analyzing Cang Lang Zhi Shui, displays their imposed exile and the loss of contemporary intellectuals in the process of seeking for their spirit since the 1990s. This paper tries to find a way out for the intellectuals.
