Yasunari Kawabata was the second Asian novelist won the Nobel Prize for literature. His works was on the bridge of pursing the national character and modernity. His works not only showed the "Japan" character of tradition of Japan, but also reflected the requirements of Japanese literature and the law of the literature itself. My article focuses on how Yasunari Kawabata created in the integration and exclusion between the national character and modernity.I show three-parts analysis of the exploration of Yasunari Kawabata's works between the national character and modernity. The first part mainly analyses his works at the beginning of the exploration and focuses on the bias and the immature of the cross of national character and modernity. The second part shows Yasunari Kawabata's perfect combination between the national character and modernity. The last part focuses on the recognition and re-exploration of the ideas of pursing nationality and modernity after the perfect combination stage. From the three aspects above,I attempt to reveal the whole view of how Yasunari Kawabata deals with the relationship of the national character and modernity in the literature.
