The fiction is regarded as a self-contained art by Henry James . To his way of thinking, the fiction has its own strict form and standard . As a transitional fictionist at the turn of the century , his thought made tremendous contribution to the renewed respected fiction.Henry James'creation, which succeeds European and American Realism and opens European and American Modernism, possesses all the complexities of the transitional period. Henry James himself was considered as the first American of Realism by many scholars as well and greatly influenced many American realists, including Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, T.S.Eliot etc. In this way, his fictional creation is a bridge between American Realistic literature and Modernistic literature.Henry James not only exerts great influence on Modernist writers, but also creates works of distinct realism. The realism in his stories, is embodied in many ways but is mostly shown in its heterogeneous nature and dialogism. Due to his social experience, his works naturally involves the contradictions of the old and the new continent and social order, the confrontation between life philosophy and ideology. In his fiction of international themes, there are often direct confrontations on the conflicts of the ideology of the old and new continents, and ones of American culture and European ancient culture, the different sense of Americans living in Europe. In the fiction, you can hear the words and voices of various characters: the author, narrator and main characters. Just as what Mikhail Bakhtin said, novel words should accommodate many voices, the performance of different ideological conflict, and reflect a profound dialogue. Only in the dialogue and in the exchanges of those who hold different views, can it be proved.Bakhtin's academic research is able to have a global impact, not only because he put forward some new novel theories, but more importantly, his innovative research methods. This innovation creates a unique perspective and methods. In this article I would like to take this perspective and approach to do research in the dialogism of James'fiction. This dissertation includes three aspects: the relationship between author and protagonist, the dialogue between characters in the fiction , the dialogue of the character and self . The dissertation is not entirely strictly apply Bakhtin's theory of the novel. It sees Henry James' novel as the basic starting point, setting Bakhtin's theory of the dialogue as the theoretical background, and will focus on Henry James'fiction.By analyzing the dialogue in the fiction, we can further define Henry James'role of connecting in American literature between the traditional and the modern, and appreciate his contribution to American literature and modern literature.
